Jay Electronica Talks Upcoming Projects With Nas, Lupe Fiasco
Posted by MeRCY! at 10:17 AM"It's still Act II. Act III, the official album, which 'Exhibit A' and 'Exhibit C' are a part of [as well as] 'Dear Moleskin,' " Jay said in Europe earlier this week. "Me and Mos [Def] have a project that we're doing, me and Guilty Simpson have a project that we're doing. I would like to do a project with Lupe — [Fiasco] we're going to do a project at some point. Me and Nas have a project that we're doing. I'm just trying. I'm in the process of working and connecting. I don't really feel like a song or an album is the end-all, be-all to what we're doing.
"You can expect my album this year," he added. "You can expect multiple projects this year. We're going to do a lot this year."
Electronica is focused on responsibilities outside of rap, including raising a baby daughter with singer Erykah Badu.
"Dealing with a lot personally, that not necessarily takes me away from my music, because it comes through in my music as well. But as a person trying to grow and figure out how to handle things, learn and be a man — all that's a part of the process too. It's hard to put a release date on those type of things when you're factoring those things in."
The New Orleans native said that "Exhibit A" producer Just Blaze will produce 65 percent of his solo debut. Jay's commanding mic presence and wordplay have captured the ears of many, and he said he has no choice but to come with sustaining lyrics like "I make the devil hit his knees and say, 'To our father' " — he's a product of his golden-era-of-rap influences.
"The lyricism in my music — I come from a different era," he explained. "I was born in '76. I was raised in the '80s. I'm an '80s baby. LL Cool J was the first person that inspired me to rhyme. I have a lot of bragging in my rhymes. LL was my first enlightenment. If you would have asked me this two years ago, I would have said lyricism was lacking. Like somebody would say Soulja Boy ... you would say he's not a lyricist, right? If you took a poll and said, 'Is Soulja Boy a lyricist?' People would say no, right? But it's not the words, it's energy of what he does that's the lyrics. It's not the lyrics — the energy of it is the connector. The energy of it is greater than the words of it. In a sense, lyrics has been lacking in the contest of grammar and vocabulary, but the spirit and energy of it is never gone — or else the complete genre of hip-hop is gone."

J. Cole - A Star Is Born
Posted by MeRCY! at 7:59 AM
"The plan, finish up this album, make sure that it's classic," Cole said in an interview, "make sure that it's perfect, at least to my eyes and my standards. I got high standards, put it out, hope that it's received well, hopefully [it'll] have some hits and then some more hits and tour the world man, really America. I wanna do a college tour -- production-wise, it's just me and No I.D. and a guy named Science. We've done a couple joints together. But other than that, I'm just trying to [focus] into my production but I'm open to anything man, so, I don't care who it is. Even Pharrell, when we were on tour, Pharrell kept telling me he wanted to get it and I would love to do that." ("Los Angeles Leakers")
"If you would have asked me two weeks ago [about the status], I would have told you I was 30 percent, man, [now it's] 70," Cole revealed in an interview. "Like 75, like, this is how many songs, I hit a little streak and now I got some stuff that's impressing me. Like, 'Man, did I just do this song?' I got in with [producer] No I.D. and now, you gotta understand, I've been doing music, myself, my own beats, since I was making my own songs, so it's hard to allow somebody to come in but now the way that we make music, it isn't just 'Oh yeah, I got this beat for you, rap on this beat,' he's in there, I'm in there, there's a guitar player, key player, it feels like you're making an album." (KUBE 93)
"Ah man, Pharrell, that was incredible man," Cole said about working with the producer. "I think he just got named producer of the decade by Billboard and I just read that today, so, even when I read it I was like 'D*mn, I was just in the studio with this dude,' so it's kinda an honor to get some of his time like that and we came out of it with some good material, the song I really like. I'm not gonna speak on it though, [laughs], but just his creative process, he's like an energy guy or whatever so, I seen it before. I was in the studio with Puff and he's an energy guy too, like, you kinda just feed off of him. Like if somebody else plays a beat that he plays, you're not gonna feel the same way because he sells it to you almost. Like his whole body movement, he'll start singing the hook, or his idea for the hook and you're like, 'Yeah, yeah, you know that's hot,' so it's just an honor to be in there with Pharrell...It's gonna be good, man." (One Neck, Two Chains)

Mercy's Tattoos
Posted by MeRCY! at 7:44 AMPainful Experience?..Nah...This Is My 3rd And 4th Tattoo. I Feel Tattoos Are Part of Art And My Body Is the Canvas. Tattoos Is Addictive Once You Get One. I Make Sure Each Tattoo Represents Me Or Something That Played A Significant Role Upon My Life. For Example, "Lurline" On My Left Arm Is My Grandmother. She Pretty Much Took Care of Me During My Tender Age. My Moms Would Tell Me She Carried Me Around Like A Purse. From FLA to NY Countless Trips With Her...She's Always Been the Love of My Life. The Next Tattoo "Messiah" Is Also Known As Jesus. I Asked My Father to Give Me A Word That'll Describe Me Or Something I Represent For...He Replied "Chosen One...Messiah". I Always Had A Connection With Jesus And Angels...I'm A Firm Believer. I Decided to Put Each Tattoo On My Inner Bicep...Meaning It Represents Strength. Both of the Individuals...Proudly Carried Me During My Lifetime So Far...I Do Plan to Get More Tattoos And the Next One...Is Really Gonna Be Big And Special...

NO I.D. (Producer Highlight)
Posted by MeRCY! at 10:13 AM
Crowned our Producer of the Year for 2009, Chicago-born No I.D. has basically circumnavigated the Hip Hop ocean with his unique musical interpretations and soundscapes. Sixteen years after producing the all time classic "I Used to Love H.E.R." for fellow Chicago brethren Common, Dion Wilson came full circle last year after the trend-killing success of "D.O.A." Demanding critical acclaim on par with the ’94 hit, the most talked about song of the year put the producer extraordinaire in territories new.
HipHopDX: Did you expect 2009 to be quite as productive as it was for you?
No I.D.: No. [Laughs] I just didn’t expect it. I mean it didn’t surprise me but it definitely wasn’t what I was thinking. I didn’t plan it to go this way.
DX: Is that the art of a producer, to expect the unexpected?
No I.D.: I mean like I say, with 20 years in the industry, I don’t expect anything. It’s about staying creative.
DX: What would you pinpoint as the highlight of your year?
No I.D.: Now, honestly, it would be the success of "D.O.A." [by Jay-Z] on a critical level, as I haven’t felt that response since "I Used To Love H.E.R." [by Common].
